Education and literacy

The literacy rate in all tehsils under SDA has more than 70% literate population, except for Chhachhrauli which has a rate of 59%. This is slightly better when compared with the state literacy rate of 68%. The literacy rate among women is relatively low, ranging from 63.4% in Yamunanagar to 67.4% in Ambala, which is nevertheless better than the state average.

Analysis of statistical data indicate negligible school dropout at middle and senior secondary level. Segregated data is not available to comment on the variation between boy and girl children in these districts. There is a drop out of 8% in Yamunanagar at senior secondary school level, especially among girl children, which is 10%.

The education infrastructure such as electricity, safe drinking water, toilets in terms of schools is low in blocks of Morni, Pinjore ,Barwala of Panchkula, and few villages of Chachrauli whereas the ratio of teacher to students is good in the region. Fig 2.7 shows the number of primary, middle and senior secondary recognised schools per 1000 students in Haryana and the districts under Shivalik region.
